The Interstate 5 freeway at Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano will undergo full nighttime closures on Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2, as construction crews begin to erect falsework for the I-5/Ortega Highway interchange project.

Closures will take place between 11:59 p.m. and 5 a.m. on both nights. Only one direction of the freeway will be closed each night, and closures of northbound and southbound I-5 will not take place simultaneously.

During the closures, motorists travelling on I-5 will be instructed to exit at Ortega Highway, proceed through the intersection and re-enter the freeway on the next on-ramp.

Construction crews will be putting up falsework on the south half of the bridge, as part of Caltrans’ $86.2 million project to reconstruct the I-5/Ortega Highway interchange.

Falsework is a type of temporary structure used to support other structures, like bridges, until they can support themselves. In the coming weeks, construction crews will fill much of the bridge with new concrete, including the stem (the center part of the bridge) and the soffit (the underside of the bridge). Caltrans expects to complete concrete pours before Thanksgiving.

Construction for the project began in February and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2015.
