I am writing this letter because I was so disappointed by my last trip to San Juan Capistrano. I have always loved and enjoyed your small town. I love taking the train down just for the day.

On Nov. 22, I came down with my sister for a day trip. As we came into town, we stopped at Mission Grill for a quick snack before enjoying the Mission. I have been there before and always have been pleased with the food, service and love the relaxed atmosphere. The plan was to enjoy the Mission and then go have a nice lunch.

As we came into the Mission, my sister asked if they had any recommendations for lunch. The first thing out of the young man’s mouth was, “Don’t go across the street. The food is bad and the service is awful.” I felt so embarrassed (we had just left there). As we went on through the Mission, my sister asked several other employees the same question and got very similar answers—this seemed like a script. Why not skip this and talk about some positive choices? This left me very confused and disappointed in the Mission. It ruined the day, and we will not visit the Mission again.

  • I heard and experienced the same on several occasions. The Mission is the Gustapo of SJC. Many have commented on its being the most commercialized of the 21 missions. It’s also shameful that they refuse to portray the truth of Native experience in these encampments. I’ve asked Michele Lawrence Adams to offer books such as A Cross of Thorns by Elias Castillo to be more “fair and balanced.” They owe Mission Grill an apology. Sounds to me like a slander lawsuit would resolve the issue.
