LAURA FREESE, San Juan Capistrano

I just returned from a tour of the soon-to-be completed Inn at the Mission, and it is fabulous!

Back in 2007, I wrote a Dispatch article about how badly we needed a hotel in the downtown area so we could stop bleeding revenue to our neighboring cities. Luckily for us, a hotel was approved in 2010. Now, at last, 10 years later, the Inn at the Mission is coming to fruition, and it is better than I ever envisioned.

It is part of the exclusive Marriott Autograph Collection of boutique hotels, which is 4-star.  Their tagline is “Exactly like Nothing Else,” which fits the City of San Juan Capistrano perfectly.

Attention to detail makes the difference. It is the approved hotel of 2010, with enhancements and upgrades such as higher-end corbels, pavers, decorative tile, enormous trees, downspouts and meandering paths that are better than I ever imagined. Much of the interior art will be from local artists, too. With its well-appointed 124 rooms, a bar, a restaurant, a spa, multiple event rooms, and valet parking, the downtown businesses anticipate the hotel will help their bottom lines, so they are excitedly awaiting the Inn to open its doors.

The Inn at the Mission is just the beginning of a renaissance of downtown SJC. Now with the makeover of Capistrano Plaza, the redo of the Mission Grill and the addition of our much-needed hotel, we have lots to look forward to in 2020. Let’s help welcome them all.

Editor’s note: Laura Freese is a former San Juan Capistrano City Councilmember.
