SUPPORT THIS INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM
The article you’re about to read is from our reporters doing their important work — investigating, researching, and writing their stories. We want to provide informative and inspirational stories that connect you to the people, issues and opportunities within our community. Journalism requires lots of resources. Today, our business model has been interrupted by the pandemic; the vast majority of our advertisers’ businesses have been impacted. That’s why The Capistrano Dispatch is now turning to you for financial support. Learn more about our new Insider’s program here. Thank you.
The Mariners 936 (South Coast Sailing Team) held its Bridge of Honor for the first time since the fall of 2019 outside at Lantern Bay Park in Dana Point on June 27. The event is usually held twice a year after each season and under more formal circumstances. Mariners 936 (South Coast Sailing Team) is a nonprofit focused on youth sailing and boating by building confidence and leadership skills.
Olivia Atkins is the winner of the 2021 Cvengros Scholarship at $10,000. One Mariner a year is chosen.
Last year’s winner was Hannah Carter, who was also the National Sea Scout Boatswain. Hannah also was awarded Sea Scouts highest honor of Quartermaster, though all the events for her in April 2020 were canceled.
The usual 2020 season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the program continued through Zoom, with some sailing and hands-on instructions resuming as restrictions were lifted.
There will be an informational night in early September for new and returning Mariners. The fall season runs September to November, and spring from March to May. There is also open sailing throughout the year to the Mariners. Mariners 936 is open to youth ages 14-18, and there is Mariner Juniors for ages 12-13.
