More than 3,000 people flocked to Mission San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, May 12 for the 14th Annual Battle of the Mariachis Festival.
The event showcased young mariachi musicians during an all-inclusive day of cultural celebrations and family fun. The event featured live performances by mariachi groups, competing on stage for cash prizes in front of distinguished judges.
“The festival featured 13 mariachi groups from three states, including California, Nevada and Arizona,” a press release said. “A sold-out audience of more than 3,000 guests experienced exciting performances from the mariachi music groups which ranged in age from elementary school to university and professional level.”
The first place youth category winner was Mariachi Corazón de Tucson, of Tucson, Arizona; and the first place open category was Mariachi de Uclatlán, of University of California, Los Angeles. Each team won $1,500.
