After a forum held by the Ocean Hills Republican Club of Republican candidates for the 49th Congressional District on March 23, a straw poll revealed San Juan Capistrano Mayor Pro Tem Brian Maryott held a majority of the votes.

The forum included candidates Maryott, Assemblyman Rocky Chavez, Diane Harkey, Joshua Schoonover, Mike Schmitt; Kristin Gaspar did not attend. Of the 94 votes received in the straw poll, 12 were undecided, and out of those 82 ballots who chose a candidate—Maryott received 34 votes, or 41 percent. Chavez came in second with 15 votes at 18 percent.
