The J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center will be offering an opportunity for families to learn more about Special Needs Trusts (SNTs) and the planning resources available for their special needs loved ones on Thursday, Nov. 1.

The workshop, sponsored by The Shea Center’s Reins of Life Legacy Club, will begin at 6 p.m. at The Shea Center and will be conducted by Attorney Mark E. Powell. Powell is a longtime volunteer for the center and a partner at Dorsey & Whitney, LLC.

According to a center news release, a Special Needs Trust allows for lifetime assistance to a child or adult with special needs, but is “created in a manner that medical benefits such as Medicaid or Social Security income will continue.”

Powell has been licensed as a California attorney since 1996 and the California State Bar Board of Legal Specialization certified him as a specialist in estate planning, trust and probate law. He will give participants points to consider when working with their own advisers on trusts.

People interested in participating the program should RSVP by contacting Gloria Killburn at or 949.240.8441, ext. 111. Space is limited so participants should register early.
