The annual Shea Center BBQ fundraiser for the equestrian therapy nonprofit looked a lot different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it still raised $640,000.

This year’s weeklong fundraiser involved a drive-thru parade for clients and volunteers, online show and an auction instead of the usual in-person event of past years. Approximately 600 individuals registered for the online activities, and barbecue meals were still provided, a press release said.

“Our riders get to see their horses. They have a great time,” Shea Center Executive Director Dana Butler-Moburg said during the drive-thru recognition on Sept. 12. “Our sponsors come. We’re really celebrating our sponsors, too.”

The online event was held on Sept. 19.

The Shea Center BBQ didn’t happen as usual in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that doesn’t mean clients, staff and volunteers went unrecognized. Phot: Collin Breaux.
